]]>Shortly after the tenth anniversary of 9/11, Matt and I visited New York City for two months while working on our first "Tin Can Travels" book. All throughout our stay, we were bombarded with reminders of the disaster -- every museum had an exhibit focusing on either the WTC attacks or the recovery efforts, the National September 11th Memorial had just opened to the public, we could even see "Freedom Tower" being constructed from our RV park across the river in Jersey City. In the West Village, we tripped over a display of hand-painted tiles that children from around the country had sent New Yorkers in the days and months after the twin towers fell -- a collection of colorful ceramic condolence cards. At night, all of Lower Manhattan seemed to glow from the illuminated memorial pools, and the construction lights on the new tower were lit up like a Christmas tree. We were invited to see the pictures and hear the stories of both victims and survivors. We viewed artifacts discovered in the rubble -- even held a few of them in our hands. We met people whose loved ones had disappeared in the blink of an eye. And while we'd been in town during the clean-up and seen the aftermath at Ground Zero years before, it didn't compare to the human story these bits and pieces told.
